The Memories Dance Band recalls the sounds, excitement, and appeal of the big band era when everyone from Bobby Soxers to society dames danced the night away in places like the East Coast’s Glen Island Casino on the east coast to the Palomar Ballroom on the west, and everywhere in between. It was America’s music and it provided comfort in trying times at home and abroad. And it lives on.
Memories Dance Band was founded in 1980 by Lakewood, businessman Ron Kimberlin and his wife Darlene. Back then their son Scott was in the jazz band at Green Mountain high school and quite by accident, that student band became the core of the Memories Band – sort of a one time, off-campus extracurricular activity, which morphed into a full-time working band, much to the delight of the students.
Today, we perform the music of the Great American Songbook in the style of the big bands of the 1940s. The unforgettable music of the Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman bands lives on with that of dozens of other renowned leaders, such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Les Brown, and the list goes on. The excitement associated with the big band was all over America at a time when local dance halls, clubs, and famous ballrooms were overflowing with dancers who never seemed too tired, always asking for more into the wee hours. Waltzes, Foxtrots, Cha-Chas, Polkas and Tangos are still the standard repertoire of big bands, and the Memories Dance Band can fill your every musical party need.
